The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has published a set of criteria for organisations looking to submit a proposal for a waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) ‘compliance fee’.
Under the new regulations, which came into effect in January, WEEE producer compliance schemes must either reach their collection target for the year or pay a fee for every tonne they have been unable to collect. This new guidance has made it clear that the new mechanism, the prices and the details of the operator who will run it, will not be made known until mid-February 2015, after the current compliance year has ended. BIS stated that this is to prevent the speculative collection of excess WEEE.
