Clarity Donates to Surfers Against Sewage

As part of our commitment to be a good business doing good, we have donated £2,000 to environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, providing beach clean kits that are helping communities to tackle plastic pollution on beaches.

Our donation, through Clarity Cares, has provided 8 Beach Clean Boxes,  which contain tools such as buckets, reusable sacks, gloves and shovels, as well as vital scientific monitoring and education materials. With marine litter and ocean plastic being found even in the deepest parts of the ocean, Surfers Against Sewage are championing beach cleans, education and campaigns to ensure we keep the 7,723 miles of UK coastline free from litter and reduce reliance on single use plastic.

Surfers Against Sewage were founded in 1990, dedicated to the protection of oceans, waves, beaches and wildlife. Since the charity started campaigning to improve water quality, the UK has seen a significant improvement in the bathing waters of our shores, with 98.5% of the 625 beaches classified as excellent, good or sufficient. When the organisation first began campaigning that standard was only seen at 27% of bathing waters.

Through the provision of beach clean boxes and the regional reps for Surfers Against Sewage, there have been 2012 beach cleans organised, with over 62,000 volunteers, collecting over 93 tonnes of plastic in 2019. They will continue to campaign as an authentic voice for the ocean and help grow their Plastic Free Communities Campaign.

David Honcoop, Managing Director of Clarity Environmental, said: “We have experience seeing the prolific nature of litter in our area after litter picking the equivalent distance of Brighton to Lands End earlier in the year. With our offices being a stones throw from Brighton seafront, we value the coastal landscape and have seen the positive impact community beach cleans can have. We are thrilled to have been able to provide equipment, through Surfers Against Sewage, for people to organise this themselves and keep our oceans clean.”

In 2018, we made a pledge to donate at least 1 per cent of our profits each quarter to charitable causes or awareness campaigns. All of our donations are managed by our internal charity committee, Clarity Cares, who meet four times a year to decide on the causes, charities or projects that our business will choose to support each quarter.

As part of our company ethos, we encourage our staff and customers to involve themselves in our charity donations by suggesting worthwhile charities to support and committing to fundraise for them. You can find out more about our commitment to be a good business doing good, see the donations we have made this year and recommend a charity to our Clarity Cares donation committee in the Clarity Cares section of our website.
