PRN Monthly Update: Stark Contrast to 2015 Volatility

This time last year, the packaging recovery note market was in a period of volatility, with many grades experiencing dramatic fluctuations in price. This year, however, we are reporting a very different story and the markets have remained stable throughout November.

The updated Q3 packaging and recycling data was released earlier this month (9 November 2016) confirming strong results for all materials. Paper and wood have already met this year’s targets, and the remaining grades continue to be well on their way.

Chris Taylor, Clarity Environmental Commercial Manager, said: “As we predicted, and as a result of the decline in demand, this month prices across most PRN grades have either dropped a little or are holding steady.

“Whilst we haven’t seen any evidence of it yet, there is a risk that these low prices, compared to last year, could result in a struggle for export and reprocessing, particularly in the case of plastic. But for now the market is non-eventful and we expect that to continue for the remainder of the year.”

Chris added that Clarity Environmental’s PRN team continues to trade well: “We have already surpassed our performance in 2015, with forward markets for 2017 trading in earnest, particularly paper, glass and plastic as prices are set.”
