Recently announced by Defra, the UK’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, plans for the centre’s opening are scheduled for April 2024. Collaborating institutions include University College London and the British Geological Survey, with the objective of developing sustainable strategies for resource efficiency and circular economy practices, ultimately contributing to carbon reduction and responsible environmental management.
In a joint effort, participating institutions, alongside UN funding, have committed £1.85 million towards the centre’s establishment. Their focus encompasses sectors such as metals, critical minerals, and construction, aiming to drive innovation in sustainable resource management.
Key regulatory mechanisms such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Deposit Return Schemes are integral components of the circular economy approach. These pieces of legislation incentivise recycling and reuse, reducing reliance on virgin materials in manufacturing.
Resource Minister, Robbie Moore has commended the centre’s establishment, highlighting the UK’s leadership in sustainable resource management. He emphasises the initiative’s importance in empowering nations globally to embrace the opportunities of the circular economy and transition to a more environmentally friendly future.
