Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme Collects Over 2 Million Drinks Containers in First Month of Operation

Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme implemented on the 1st of February 2024, has shown strong engagement during its inaugural month of operation. Data provided by Re-turn, the scheme’s operator, indicates that over 2 million drinks containers were returned within this timeframe, with more than 705,000 transactions recorded.

The scheme’s efficiency is evident in the daily figures, with February 29th registering as the most active day, witnessing the return of 200,999 drinks containers. This trend indicates a gradual increase in consumer engagement as familiarity with the scheme grows.

Ciaran Foley, CEO of Re-turn, has expressed satisfaction with the scheme’s early progress, acknowledging the essential role of consumer involvement. He emphasises the commitment to meeting Ireland’s recycling targets, aiming to surpass the 77% goal set for 2025.

The infrastructure supporting the scheme has been significantly expanded, with 2,193 Reverse Vending Machines deployed across 1,380 return locations. This widespread accessibility has facilitated participation in the circular economy initiative, aimed at enhancing the collection and recycling rates of single-use drinks containers.

Comparative analysis with other European countries reveals Ireland’s strong initial participation rates. Notably, Romania, with a larger population, experienced a slower uptake compared to Ireland’s swift adoption (31,000 containers in first month of operation).

Addressing initial challenges, Foley acknowledges stakeholders’ patience during the transition period and provides clarity on the refund process for non-logo stock. Effective from 1st June 2024, all drink containers in plastic bottles or aluminium cans within specified dimensions will feature the Re-turn logo and be accepted by Reverse Vending Machines.

The Deposit Return Scheme demonstrates Ireland’s commitment to meeting EU recycling targets. With ambitious goals set for the future, the scheme serves as a pragmatic approach to enhancing recycling rates and promoting sustainability nationwide.
