Clarity challenges air pollution

As a business committed to environmental causes, from helping our members to comply with current packaging and recycling legislation to our Clarity Cares donations, we always aim to find ways in which we could make the environment around us a better place.

Last month, inspired by World Environment Day, we wanted to address air pollution and climate change and challenge our team’s habits that could make a big impact on personal emissions.

With UN figures suggesting 1 in 9 deaths are caused by air pollution, it is important to raise awareness about personal habits, and also our businesses practices, that could be adjusted to more environmentally friendly ones.

With transport being so heavily dependent on fossil fuels our four-car Clarity fleet was an obvious focus for us in cutting business carbon dioxide emissions. We have, over the course of the last 12 months, substituted all of these vehicles to electric ones and we have made a massive impact on our business miles with over 10,000 miles using electricity rather than fossil fuels in the past 6 months.

We extended this challenge to our team by asking them to consider different forms of transport for their commute to work. Being located on the edge of the picturesque South Downs, our offices are not the easiest to reach without a car, however we have had some amazing commitments by several staff members. They have swapped their usual commute in cars to busses, bikes and their own two feet. Plus, four of our staff members clubbed in together and have spent the whole month car sharing, instead of each taking their own vehicle.

Alongside our consideration of fuel efficiency in commuting, we also incentivised the Clarity staff to switch out their usual lunch offerings to vegetarian or vegan alternatives. With animal agriculture creating a significant amount of global greenhouse gas emissions switching to a vegan diet is often cited as one of the biggest ways you can cut your personal carbon emissions.

This is, for a majority of people, a daunting undertaking however by encouraging staff to share their recipes and tips with others a number of carnivores really embraced the challenge. We have seen some wonderful culinary creations, and some not so creative. From Mexican inspired bean salads, Thai veggie curry to beans on toast, the month has been educational and, in the most part, delicious.
