Clarity Joins On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL)

We are happy to announce our new membership with On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL), which will help us to offer additional support and benefits to our packaging compliance scheme members.

OPRL was founded ten years ago to help retailers and brands engage their customers in recycling packaging. Now with over 330 members, membership has more recently been opened to the wider packaging supply chain and compliance schemes.

OPRL’s mission is to deliver simple, consistent and UK-wide recycling messages and the label has three categories which tell consumers how likely it is that their local authority will accept specific packaging materials for recycling. With OPRL’s labels “recognised and acted upon by 7 in 10 consumers”, the organisation helps the public to recycle more packaging correctly, and more often.

Our packaging compliance members will benefit from our membership with OPRL, enabling us to provide further guidance on sustainable options for their packaging and how to clearly convey this to their customers. Our members recognise that communicating recyclability with customers is important and we are keen to be involved in OPRL’s work beyond labelling. With Defra’s 25 Year Environment Plan identifying the circular economy as a key component in tackling waste, helping councils and others to increase recycling rates for materials with low collection and recycling rates is key to minimising the environmental footprint.

Martin Trigg-Knight, Clarity Environmental’s Packaging Compliance Scheme Manager, said: “OPRL’s mission sits very much in line with our commitment to go beyond compliance for our packaging scheme members. Our membership with OPRL allows us to further advise on consistent and well-understood labels, ensuring members have the tools to make informed decisions on the sustainability of their packaging.

With OPRL providing practical application alongside statutory information and a scheme encouraging innovation in processes and technology we are excited for the opportunities this membership will provide for our members and packaging development.”
